What is animal testing? And why you should switch to cruelty free beauty products
Most people aren’t actually aware of the savage treatment that animals are subject to, as test subjects in the name of human beauty & skincare products. Basically, these rats, mice, monkeys, rabbits, and guinea pigs are kept in cages and bred for the sole purpose of testing beauty products.
Test animals are often shaved of their fur and have various chemicals rubbed on their bare skin in order for cosmetics brands to test possible irritations that the products might cause on human skin. Test animals are force-fed many different cosmetic ingredients to confirm whether oral intake or inhalation of those substances will negatively affect humans.
If a substance is harmful to humans, imagine what it can do to small, helpless animals. One doesn’t have to be a vegetarian in order to want to stop the unnecessary pain and suffering of animals.
In addition, these animals are often killed and cut open so that further research on the influence of certain ingredients can be made. With such dangerous chemicals being used to make these products, why would anyone want to use them in the first place?
It’s been said that we are only truly human when we treat other living, non-human beings with the same respect that we ourselves enjoy. This is why making the shift to cruelty-free beauty products is a really big step for humanity! There’s absolutely no reason why any animal should suffer the testing process of any cosmetic product, just so that it can be safely used by people later on.
Fortunately, animal rights awareness has been on the rise in recent years and because of their efforts, these operations are now banned in countries like Israel, Norway, India, Europe and the United Kingdom.
Australia is currently making moves towards banning animal testing. It’s difficult to know exactly how many animals will be affected by this ban, as companies do not advertise their use of animal testing and results are often unpublished. It’s likely to be quite small, but this ban will both improve their lives and be an important international signal.
However, in countries like China, where beauty market is a $32 billion industry, it is still compulsory to test all cosmetic and beauty products. It is believed that more than 100 million animals are killed during these testing operations in China and US. In many other cases, the animals are permanently blinded, poisoned or crippled because of the allergic reactions caused by the chemicals which most of these cosmetics have.
Still unsure why choose Cruelty Free? We should avoid using animal tested beauty products not just because of the inhumane practises, but because these products can prove to be extremely harmful for your skin and eyes. Unbelievably, more than 90 percent of the products that pass animal testing procedures fail at the clinical trials where they are tested on humans. In order to get the approval of the health department, each product has to undergo at least 50 experiments that require more than 12,000 animals. Most of the tests are conducted by rubbing harmful chemicals on the skins of the animals. Some tests are done by force feeding the animals with lethal doses of the chemicals to determine what amount of the product will cause serious health issues in humans.
There are many cosmetic manufacturing giants which have stopped following these cruel procedures, since there are a number of alternatives to these brutal operations. Opt for the brands of beauty products which are accredited and approved by organisations like PETA and Choose Cruelty Free for being 100% cruelty free.
